How to choose an accessory for a torque wrench
The first criterion is the size of the plug-in fitting in the tool. The insert must match the socket of the torque wrench. The products available include, among others, the 9x12 mm, 14x18 mm, 22x28 mm and 24.5x28 mm standards.
The size of the plug-in fitting is a different parameter from the working size of the insert. For example, a ratchet may have a 14x18 mm fitting on the wrench side and a 1/2" drive on the socket side. In the case of an open-end or ring insert, you need to match both the plug-in fitting and the size corresponding to the bolt or nut.
Before buying, also check the permissible load (torque) rating of the specific accessory. This applies especially to ratchets, adapters and other components used at higher tightening torques. The accessory should be suited both to the tool's fitting and to the torque value required in the given application.
Open-end insert, ring insert or ratchet?
Open-end inserts give access to the joint from the side. They work especially well where the design of the part or its surroundings makes it difficult or impossible to use a standard socket for tightening a bolt or nut.
Ring inserts enclose the fastener all the way around and require that the insert can be slid over the joint. When choosing, you need to match the wrench size and the plug-in standard to the torque tool you own.
A plug-in ratchet lets you use sockets. In this case you need to check two sizes: the standard of the plug-in fitting mounted in the torque wrench and the size of the drive, for example 1/4", 3/8", 1/2" or 3/4", to which the socket is matched.
In hard-to-reach places, extension inserts are also used. They make it possible to reach joints that cannot be conveniently handled with a standard, shorter insert.
The insert can affect the actual tightening torque
With extension inserts, adapters and other accessories that change the effective length of the wrench, their geometry must be taken into account. If the axis of the joint being tightened is at a different distance from the axis of the fitting than was intended for a standard insert, the value set on the wrench may need to be recalculated.
Before starting work, therefore, check the dimensions of the insert and the tool manufacturer's recommendations. This is particularly important with extension inserts and adapters, where the change in the length of the wrench arm is greater. A correctly chosen insert should ensure both mechanical compatibility and correct transfer of the set torque.
Adapters help you use different insert standards
If the wrench and the insert you need use different fitting standards, an adapter may be the solution. The range includes adapters for moving between different fitting sizes, including 9x12 mm, 14x18 mm, 22x28 mm and 24.5x28 mm.
Such a solution lets you use inserts you already own with another tool, but it requires checking the parameters of the whole setup. The adapter also becomes an element that transmits torque, and using it can change the effective length of the wrench and affect the torque value obtained.
If you are only now putting together a tool along with suitable inserts, also see the torque wrenches available in our store.
Custom inserts for unusual joints
A standard insert does not always make it possible to reach the joint or maintain the required working parameters. In such cases we can prepare accessories adapted to a specific application, including inserts with non-standard dimensions made to the customer's needs.
We describe the possibilities for such solutions in our special offer. This solution is particularly useful in production, maintenance and other applications in which the tool must be adapted to a specific workstation or joint design.
